2006 saturn ion review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. More power and convenience. introductionsaturn's strength has always been its dealers. It's saturn's car that haven't always measured up, particularly in comfort and refinement. When it appeared in 2003, the ion represented a major improvement over the old saturn s-series. We found the seats uncomfortable and its levels of refinement were average at best. However, saturn has continued to update and refine the ion over the past three model years, and we came away with positive impressions of the current models. Most of the things we complained about have been changed and refinement has been improved overall.  the most substantial changes came for 2005: larger and more supportive seats have replaced the barstools used previously, and a larger steering wheel provides a more comfortable grip. Suspension tweaks have resulted in a smoother and quieter car that's more pleasant in everyday use. At the same time, the handling is sharper, making it more fun to drive. And the appearance of the sedan was greatly improved with a new grille.  the improvements continued for 2006: saturn has reconfigured the center dash to provide more room for storage and to enhance legroom. Onstar is now standard on all ions. A larger, more powerful engine is available. Saturn has dropped the base-level sedan with its narrow seats, and a new enhanced performance package has been added to bridge the gap between the base-engine/base suspension models and the ion red line sport compact. Prices have been reduced, especially at the lower end of the line, where an 2006 ion 2 sedan lists for $2,455 less than a comparable '05 model.  meanwhile, all of the ion's best features remain unchanged. The quad coupe features innovative dual rear-access doors, like those on an extended-cab pickup, that make it easy to load and unload cargo. We found we could stuff large objects into the back seat of a saturn that would not go into a traditional two-door coupe.  the red line coupe features a 205-horsepower supercharged engine good for 0-60 mph in about 6. 3 seconds. We found it fun to drive, with strong throttle response and a sporty exhaust note. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and an automatic transmission is optional 900).  for 2006, the sedan is offered in two trim levels, called ion 2 and ion 3. Onstar, previously a $695 option, is now standard as well. A preferred package 875) adds cruise control, power windows, mirrors and locks. Aluminum wheels are also available 440).  the ion 3 sedan 14,325) and coupe 15,625) add an mp3 player and better speakers, air conditioning, cruise control, programmable power locks with remote keyless entry, power windows and mirrors, and other niceties, plus 205/55 tires on 16-inch aluminum wheels. Leather upholstery 700) is optional. The new enhanced performance package 995) combines the new 2. 4-liter engine with stiffer shocks and anti-roll bars.  ion red line quad coupe 19,425) boasts 205 horsepower from a supercharged and intercooled 2. 0-liter engine mated to a heavy-duty getrag five-speed manual gearbox. A competition package 1,375) adds a quaife limited-slip differential, 17-inch forged wheels, a boost gauge and a programmable tachometer.  stereo upgrades include a cd changer, cd/mp3 systems, and xm satellite radio 325). A travel package 200) includes a map light, outside temperature gauge, compass, and auto-dimming inside mirror. A power sunroof 725) is available for all models.  safety features include dual-stage driver and front-passenger frontal airbags. New for 2006 is a passenger sensing system that switches off the right front airbag if the right front seat is unoccupied, or occupied by a small adult or child who could be injured by the airbag; it's standard in all ions except the red line. (saturn still strongly recommends restraining children in the back seat in appropriate child seats.) optional side-curtain airbags 395) are designed to improve head protection for front- and rear-seat passengers in the event of a side impact or rollover. The ion has received five-star/five-star ratings, the highest attainable, in the federal government's crash tests. We recommend the optional abs and traction control 400) as it can help the driver avoid a crash. The bright metal grille with the saturn logo front-and-center that were added for 2005 give the ion a more conventional look, but it's less polarizing (and better looking) than the previous design with its heavy bright bar over a blacked-out slot just above the bumper.  the windshield slopes dramatically, helping the relatively tall ion look sleek. And the ion does stand tall, at 57. 4 inches. The sedan's roof curves heavily down to the high trunk line, almost giving it the appearance of a hatchback rather than a traditional sedan. We found the ion's small, lever-style door handles relatively hard to grasp.  the quad coupe breathes through a blacked-out slot above the bumper and a larger rectangular scoop below, but it looks simple, functional, and attractive. Red line models have three big openings below the bumper.  the quad coupe gets its name from a pair of mini-doors behind the main portals that open on rear-mounted hinges, in much the same way as the auxiliary doors on an extended-cab pickup. The rear doors have no exterior handles to compromise the coupe's sporty styling; and when they are open, there's no b-pillar in the opening, which makes access to the rear seat very easy for such a small car. It's an innovative design that enhances the practicality of this sport coupe. The front passenger seat folds flat, improving utility further. Saturn likes to demonstrate that it's possible to stuff a nine-foot kayak into the coupe through its doors, a feat that would be plenty tough for many suvs, let alone other compact coupes. The polymer panels can't rust and, because they are slightly resilient, they resist the minor impacts that leave small dents and dings in sheet metal. Another benefit of the composite panels is that they are relatively easy to replace. Saturn has exploited this advantage on the ion by offering alternatively colored roof rails that owners can easily install to customize their car's appearance. Nickel-silver roof rails are available for the coupe and sedan, and charcoal rails are available for the sedan only. We weren't happy with the comfort nor the quality of the ion interior when the model first appeared in 2003, but saturn has made significant changes since then.  the biggest of these changes came for 2005, when larger and more substantial seats replaced the original flat and skimpy perches. This represented a vast improvement, though we'd still like more side support. However, they do feature a height adjustment via a mechanical jacking system something like volkswagen's. The red line coupe comes with excellent recaro seats, but they are best suited for drivers with narrow hips.  textures and materials were upgraded for 2005 and the overall effect is nice. Chrome rings adorn the instruments and vents. The shifter and cruise controls were improved as well.  .

2008 saturn outlook review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Comfortable crossover suv seats eight. introductionthe saturn outlook is a smooth-riding crossover suv with a powerful 3. 6-liter v6 engine and a smooth six-speed transmission. It seats up to eight. While a chevy tahoe is built on a pickup truck platform, the outlook is built with a unit-body chassis like that of a car. The outlook benefits from gm's latest 3. 6-liter v6 engine with variable valve timing; it's rated at 270 horsepower in the xe and 275 horsepower in the xr, thanks to its dual exhaust. Its six-speed automatic transmission provides good flexibility for good fuel efficiency and responsive performance.  the interior shows attention to detail, and the standard cloth seats are of a high quality and look stylish even in gray or black.  all the latest safety bits come as standard equipment, including large curtain airbags that protect the outboard passengers in all three rows of seating.  for 2008, there are few changes. Xm satellite radio is standard equipment and a 115-volt power outlet is available to provide house current for accessories. Also, a back-up camera is available that displays an image of what's behind the vehicle whenever the driver shifts into reverse, an excellent safety feature for its ability to help the driver spot small children. lineupthe 2008 saturn outlook comes in two models, xe and xr. Front-wheel-drive comes standard, all-wheel drive is optional 2000).  outlook xe 29,360) comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, eight-passenger seating, cruise control, power locks, power windows, keyless entry, onstar for one year, driver information center, xm satellite radio for one year, am/fm/cd/mp3 with six speakers, 18-inch painted alloy wheels.  outlook xr 31,770) upgrades with dual-zone automatic climate control, wood grain interior trim, power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, universal garage door opener, 18-inch machined alloy wheels, foglights. Options include leather-trimmed seats for the first two rows with heated front seats 1275), and a navigation system 2145).  options for both models include a 10-speaker sound system 880), hid headlamps 500), captain's chairs with center console for the second row 495), preferred package 505) including power adjustable driver's seat and chrome roof rails, trailering package 425) including heavy-duty engine cooling system, harness and hitch, dvd entertainment system 1295), sunroof 1300), 19-inch chrome wheels 2029), crossbars for the roof rails 213), remote starter 235). Also available: a power liftgate and rearview back-up camera.  safety equipment on both models includes the dual-stage frontal airbags, side-impact airbags in front, full-length side curtain airbags, tire pressure monitor, abs, and stabilitrak electronic stability control. The optional rearview camera enhances safety when backing up. All-wheel drive improves safety in wintry conditions. The outlook has earned a five-star crash rating from nhtsa. walkaroundsaturn calls the outlook a mid-size suv, but it's bigger than most mid-size suvs and just slightly shorter than a chevy tahoe full-size suv.  the outlook looks sleek and modern, certainly by suv standards, though it doesn't have the boldness of the ford edge.  the grille with a wide chrome bar and saturn logo proudly announces itself, and stands out against a black background. The black air dam at the bottom slices a rigid horizontal line across the chin, and its contrast against the body color makes the fascia look like the edge of a cliff. Large trapezoidal openings for the foglamps look like wicked eyes a cartoonist might draw, and above them the similar-shaped headlamps fill the corners of the car; foglamps are unavailable on the xe, leaving big black holes there. A character groove down the center of the hood finishes it all off. In short, the outlook presents a good-looking face.  from the side, the nose is conspicuously short and rounded. The styling invites the eye rearward, as the roof sweeps straight back and appears as a thin sliver at its trailing edge. The dark rear glass takes over, wrapping around about 40 percent of the vehicle, finally stopped by a wide sloping c-pillar. The fender flares are fat, and the six-spoke alloy wheels are clean and unpretentious, with six beefy lugs in the hub.  at the rear, the outlook loses some of its style. The black dam matches the front, making the suv look like it has super high ground clearance. The taillights are ordinary, and the chrome over the license plate doesn't add anything. We find the look of the xe with its body-colored trim cleaner than the xr with its chromed door handles and roof rails. interiorthe saturn outlook features eight-passenger seating, and third-row seating is relatively generous. The 2008 honda pilot has 30. 2 inches. When we add the legroom of the second and third rows together, the outlook wins with 70. 1 inches, compared with tahoe's 64. 3 and pilot's 67. 6.  getting into the outlook is very easy, especially considering it doesn't have sliding doors. Access to the third row is much easier than in most vehicles, thanks to a design called smart slide. Using a massive lever on the either side of the 60/40 split seat, each side of the second row slides way forward on rails, and then the seatback tilts until it touches the back of the front seat. It's an easy one-handed operation, opening a wide path to the third row. Smart slide is also a feature of the optional captain's chairs.  cargo capacity with both rows folded is 116. 9 cubic feet. With the third row in place it's 68. 9 cubic feet, and behind the third row it's 19. 7 cubic feet. Those are healthy numbers. The third row easily folds flat, from either the second row or through the liftgate.  the rest of the outlook interior is aces. We really liked the xe cloth, though the leather-wrapped steering wheel in the xr is sweet. The wood trim in the xr is way prettier than that in gm's past, and the analog instruments are tidy. All the other things are present, and right. There are cup holders galore, a deep console compartment, dc and 115-volt ac outlets.  the center stack is attractive with nice climate controls. To gain interior space, the outlook uses a long wheelbase with short overhangs as well as a wide track. The overall weight of 4,700 pounds contributes to that smooth ride, though that weight pales in comparison to that of a 5500-pound tahoe.  the 3. 6-liter engine handles the weight, with 275 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. That torque peaks at a conveniently low 3200 rpm, so the acceleration happens early. While never felt the need for more power. The outlook's epa-rated 16/24 mpg city/highway (16/22 mpg with all-wheel drive) is comparable to that of the ford edge with its similar and comparable v6, but the edge is smaller and only seats five.  steering and handling is above averagefor a vehicle this size, a benefit of its car-like structure.  the six-speed automatic works well and usually left it in drive. We enjoyed using the manual feature and liked the tight gear changes.  the all-wheel-drive system sends 60 percent of the power to the front wheels and 40 percent to the rear on dry pavement, and adjusts that ratio when the sensors detect slipping. That 60-40 split is more balanced than most; some systems are heavily balanced to the front, some as much as 95-5. The outlook's system is better balanced than those.  it's not uncommon to detect a difference in the.
